Thanks for visiting the Volunteer Houston blog!
Here we offer you a forum in which to express your thoughts on volunteerism in general and/or your personal experiences as a volunteer. We welcome feedback of all kinds-- the good, the bad, and the ugly (or, at least, the not-so-pretty) . We are particularly interested in your letting other potential volunteers know about volunteer engagements you've had that are particularly rewarding-- or particularly disappointing.
To see blogged comments, simply click on the "Welcome"-header at the top of this box. Then, to contributute remarks of your own, look for the "Post a comment" link near the bottom of the long box that lists the blogged comments.
We sincerely appreciate your contributions to the VH blog!

I saw your column today on the Chronicle. I'm gonna check out that "Ground ANgels" volunteer opportunity.
Thanks
I see your column too every so often. Why don't you list the contact information in the column itself? We have to call your office to get that info, but the office is closed on weekends when the column comes out.
Good question, Harold. There are a few reasons. First, the space allocated for our column is very limited, and inclusion of the contact information would further reduce the amount of descriptive content we could fit in. Secondly, having the reader contact us first allows us to share additional information with him/her that there wasn't room to fit in the very compact format of the column. Thirdly, having the reader contact us enables us to have a handle on the success we're having in promoting any given volunteer opportunities. Fourthly, it gives us the means to at least minimally document, for accountability purposes, the referrals generated from the column.
That's probably more than you wanted to know, but those are indeed the reasons.

Hi Dr. Walter,
Hope life is going well for you; we are doing well in Friendswood, and enjoy ALL the great leads you continue to give people on how to be involved in the community....YOU"RE........GRRREEAAT
I've done a lot of volunteering over the last ten years. My most rewarding experience has been as a literacy tutor. Unlike a lot of assignments, you can really see the positive impact your work is bringing about as your student gradually but very measurably improves their reading/writing skills. I got my assignment from Literacy Advance, to which I was referred by Volunteer Houston.
i've taken part in some of VH's Holiday Project visits to nursing homes and found it a very positive thing. i think its great that such an easy to do thing really cheers people up. i don't know if i can make it for Grandparents Day, but I DEFINITELY plan on doing Thnksgiving and Christmas again.
Glad to see your Chronicle column is back. I missed it those weeks it wasnt there.
